How Lucky Am I?

1823293769_c26e6a1a9a1Contrary to what many right-wing Christians may think; being gay is not a choice.  Why would I have chosen it?  The thought of possibly losing friends and family and being eternally banished for not living a “normal” life were terrifying.  It took years to cope with it and accept my own homosexuality.  Strangely enough now I would never return to a heterosexual life if I were able to.  It’s an intregrated part of me now.  That, and a recent conversation with a straight friend of a friend confirmed my content position.

5291_three3_of_hearts_playing_card_thumbWhy is it that when you’re not in a relationship you see couples everywhere?  Dining in the windows of romantic restaurants, gazing at each other from either end of a piece of spaghetti, riding tandem bikes or sipping chardonnay on picnic blankets in a park.   They say the grass is always greener and that you always want what you don’t have, but it never seems more so than when Valentine’s Day is upon us.

Update on Victorian Fires

06476611001I’ve received a number of enquiries from friends and readers about the horrific fires that have been raging in Victoria, my home state in Australia.  I am extremely appreciative of the concern for myself and my family back home.  So far the fire is estimated to have killed 300 and three towns have been razed.  It is the worst natural disaster in Australian history and in the words of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd “the people of Victoria have seen hell.”

The area that has been affected is extremely close to where I was born and I do have fond memories of the region that has been destroyed.  Fortunately, my family lives several hours away and are safe.  However many others can’t say the same and my deepest sympathies go out to them.

Across the jump are images of the aftermath:

0647855500There is only one good in those terrible, terrible fires that have killed so many of my fellow Victorians and burned so many homes.  And seeing it and hearing it over these past four days has made me tear up everytime.  It’s made me love that place even more.

ian_thorpe_02Is Ian Thorpe, the famous Australian freestyle swimmer and five-time gold medalist, being too precious when he bleats on about the insatiable gossip about his sexuality, or is he justified in saying that the constant speculation is over the top?  The same questions have been bouncing around for the better part of the decade.  And still the public reaction seems to be in the balance.

eddieizzardEven though it’s on a much smaller scale, I can now somewhat relate to how celebrities feel when their actions are questioned by complete strangers and are plastered up like dirty laundry on a clothes line for everyone to see.  Luckily my experience had nothing to do with lying, fraud, or (gasp!) gay sex scandals.  However, yesterday I was shocked to come across a published letter in the opinion section of the Fresno Bee that spoke of me directly.  It wasn’t a horrible letter, but the facts had been misconstrued by the writer, Mary Lou Mendoza, to make me look unappreciative and selfish.  Here is the online link to it: http://www.fresnobee.com/277/story/1170353.html

Tale Of Two Cities

cccAaahh, the classic battle of California: San Francisco vs. Los Angeles.  Like two feuding sisters growing up in the same home; both have always fought each other for attention and respect.  If they were to take on the characteristics of people Los Angeles would be the younger one; with a natural tan, good looks, and a gift for always being trendy and in the spotlight.  Her older sis, San Francisco, enjoys questioning politics and the status quo, and has a more sophisticated palate.  Both are polar opposites, and both have been crammed into the same state.  We, as Californians, are fortunate to have two world-class cities at our descretion.  However, residents of both cities will snub their noses at the other one.  With all this passionate dislike for each other, is it okay to buck the trend and like both?

la_auto_show_logoThe LA Auto Show has come and gone and I’m finally getting a chance to write about it (more on the reasons why in a future blog).  With this year’s auto show, held at the LA Convention Center, everything and nothing had changed.  As usual, the floor was teeming with visitors taking a glance at the new models on display, there were long lines, and the food was priced as though it was Russia during a time of famine.  However, there was a dark cloud that cast a shadow on the whole event this year.

milkposter08The praise that you’ve been hearing about “MILK” is true.  The talk about its Oscar worthy acting and plot are certainly well-deserved.  The beauty of MILK is that even though it’s natural appeal to the gay community is intended, it offers something for everybody regardless of background or sexual orientation.  Personally, it saddened and moved me, but for reasons that haven’t really been mentioned by many other reviews.

santa-eop2Yesterday I walked into the local bakery cafe and a huge grin spread over my cheeks.  Why?  Christmas decorations: wreaths of holly, candy-cane cakes, gingerbread reindeer and a small, lit-up tree.  The smile was instant, genuine, and infectious.   And you know what?  All I bought was bread.
